Our History

Key dates for Sirenis Hotels & Resorts

1967: The business group was founded at the end of the 1960s by Abel Matutes Tur and Vicente Matutes Tur, under the name of Matursa. At that time, real estate and construction represented one of the company’s main activities, given the huge growth experienced in the island of Ibiza. Various hotels were built as part of this construction business, including those in which the company itself invested, with varying percentages of ownership.

1991: The Matursa Group changes focus, dedicating itself to its own hotel management and direction. Through swaps and purchases between various partners, Matursa Hotels came to take full or majority stakes in a series of establishments, while relinquishing other minority shares. In the 90s, the second generation of the family joined the group – Pedro Matutes Barceló (current General Manager) and Abel Matutes Barceló (current Vice-President) – sharing the company’s management with Abel Matutes Tur (current President), complementing each other and offering all their greatest qualities to the company, which would ultimately lead to the development of a series of significant and progressive changes.

1995: One of these would be a change in the hotel brand. As a result, Sirenis Hotels & Resorts came to replace Matursa Hotels. What’s more, we expanded our business to include professional customer-survey systems and our own loyalty programme.

2000: With the new millennium came an important and decisive milestone in the fate of Sirenis Hotels & Resorts: the start of our internationalisation. In this year, we opened our first hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Sirenis Cocotal Beach Resort.

2001: We opened our second hotel in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic: Sirenis Tropical Suites.

2006: We created a new brand and line of hotels, Grand Sirenis Hotels & Resorts, coinciding with the opening of our first hotel in Riviera Maya, Mexico: Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Hotel & Spa. In this same year, we inaugurated a second hotel in Riviera Maya, the Grand Sirenis Mayan Beach Hotel & Spa.

2009: we launched a new business line in the Caribbean through the creation of our own holiday club, SIRENIS PREMIUM TRAVELLERS, now known as ULTIMATE LEISURE CLUB, which would significantly boost income and brand loyalty within a broad segment of customers.

2012: An important characteristic of Sirenis Hotels & Resorts has always been our huge commitment to family-friendly tourism. A commitment that we demonstrated in this year with the opening of two own-brand water parks, linked to the operation of our resorts – Sirenis Aquagames, with one park in Punta Cana and another in Ibiza.

2013/2014: We launched renovation works at Sirenis Seaview Country Club, today known as Holiday Village Seaview Ibiza. Considered one of the best family-friendly hotel complexes in Ibiza, the hotel – today an all-inclusive establishment – offered new and improved installations, with a new infinity pool, various types of swim-up rooms, three themed restaurants, various sports areas and an exclusive climbing area.

2017: We completely renovated Sirenis Hotel Club Siesta and added a themed restaurant with its own unique character to our all-inclusive culinary offering.

2018: We completed the full renovation of Sirenis Seaview Country Club. What’s more, renovation and repositioning works were finalised in Punta Cana, implementing the Grand Sirenis brand in the Dominican Republic. As a result, Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort joins the portfolio of our most exclusive hotel brand. For this property, we worked with the Maat Handasa architecture firm, headed up by Pedro Velasco and with Paulina Morán as its interior designer, both awarded the “Prix Versailles” on several occasions – an international recognition driven by UNESCO which awards architectural projects that best promote interaction between culture and the economy.

2019: We fully renovated Sirenis Hotel Club Aura, also known as TUI BLUE Aura, which today features a new building with Deluxe rooms and an infinity pool, improved installations and a range of two themed restaurants. In the Caribbean, we also completed an ambitious renovation of Grand Sirenis Riviera Maya Resort and, at the end of the same year, opened a hotel under management in Cayo Santa María, Cuba, together with the Gaviota tourism group: Grand Sirenis Cayo Santa María.

2019/2020: We transformed our hotels in Playa d’en Bossa – Sirenis Hotel Goleta and Sirenis Hotel Tres Carabelas – to give way to a new brand: The Ibiza TwIIns. A comprehensive renovation and product repositioning, consolidating our hotel accommodation in Playa d’en Bossa into one superior four-star establishment. TwIIns is an original hotel concept offering guests the chance to discover the island’s true character. Thanks to the most innovative technology, every inch of this resort offers a series of interactive activities allowing visitors to explore the great wealth of Ibizan cultural and natural heritage.

2022: Sirenis Hotels & Resorts is expanding its portfolio of hotels in the tourist destinations of Gran Canaria and Varadero, and is going to take over the management of the Marina Elite and Sirenis Tropical Varadero hotels, respectfully. With this incorporation, Sirenis Hotels & Resorts now boasts one hotel in the Canary Islands and two hotels in Cuba.

Soon, in collaboration with OxoHotel, we will be opening a hotel under management on the island of San Andrés, Colombia: Grand Sirenis San Andrés. An all-inclusive, five- star hotel, with standards currently unmatched in the country.
